Common use cases
State Usergroup Rules is a small primitive — one row maps a state to a usergroup. The interesting question is what you wire on the receiving usergroup. Below are the patterns we see most often.
1. Regional price tiers
Wholesale customers in California get a different price than wholesale customers elsewhere. Pattern:
- Groups:
wholesale-ca,wholesale-tx,wholesale-other. - Rules: CA →
wholesale-ca, TX →wholesale-tx, every other state →wholesale-other. - On the products, add usergroup-scoped price tiers for each group. Signed-in customers in the group get that group's tier when their cart is priced.
2. Compliance-gated catalogue
Alcohol, supplements, fireworks — products that can only be sold in specific states. Pattern:
- Create groups like
alcohol-eligible. - Rules: states where you hold the licence → that group; remaining states are NOT mapped.
- On the products: restrict visibility to the
alcohol-eligibleusergroup. Customers without that group don't see the SKU in the catalogue or in search.
3. State-specific shipping methods
Same-day courier in the New York metro area, standard parcel everywhere else. Pattern:
- Groups:
shipping-ny-metro,shipping-standard. - Rules: per state, attach the matching group.
- In /admin/shipping, restrict each shipping method to its usergroups. Checkout only offers methods compatible with the customer's group.
4. Content visibility (banners, payment methods)
A promotion only for Florida? A payment method only for Washington customers? Pattern:
- Group:
promo-fl. - Rule: FL →
promo-fl. - Banner visibility and the payment method's allowed usergroups filter by that group.
5. Marketing segmentation without code
Need to email every customer in the Northeast about a regional campaign? Pattern:
- Group:
region-northeastmapped from NY, MA, CT, NJ, PA, RI, VT, NH, ME (one rule per state). - CRM segment filter on the
region-northeastusergroup → the audience without writing a query.
6. A/B testing by region
Same product range, different price experiment in Texas only. Pattern:
- Group:
experiment-tx-price-low. - Rule: TX → group.
- A usergroup-scoped price tier on the group adjusts the price.
- Compare conversion vs control (any state not mapped to the experiment group).
