Getting started
1. Create a Purchase conversion action in Google Ads
- In Google Ads, open Goals → Conversions → Summary and click New conversion action.
- Choose Website, enter your store address, and add a conversion action manually:
- Goal and action optimisation: Purchase.
- Value: Use different values for each conversion (your store sends the real order total).
- Count: One is fine for most stores; Every if repeat orders by the same shopper should each count.
- Save, then open Tag setup → Use Google Tag Manager. Google shows two values:
- Conversion ID, for example
123456789(your store accepts it with or withoutAW-). - Conversion label, for example
AbC-D_efG1hIjk.
- Conversion ID, for example
Optional: create separate conversion actions for Add to cart and Begin checkout and note their labels too. They share the same Conversion ID.
2. Turn the module on
- Open Settings → Modules, find Google Ads Conversion Tracking and click Enable (or Install on the Browse tab).
- Click Configure and paste the Conversion ID and the Purchase conversion label (and any optional labels).
- Save. The tag is added to every storefront page from the next page load.
3. Check it works
- Open your storefront in a private window. If your store shows a cookie banner, choose Accept all (Google Ads waits for marketing consent).
- Place a test order (COD is easiest). Google Ads receives the purchase from the order confirmation page.
- In Google Ads the conversion action changes from Unverified to Recording conversions within a few hours. Test orders count, so remove them from reports or use a test conversion action first.
