Sell gift cards on your store

With the module on, your store has a Gift cards page at /gift-cards. A shopper:

  1. picks a suggested amount or types their own;
  2. enters the recipient's name and email, their own name and email, and an optional message;
  3. chooses Send now or Pick a date (up to a year ahead, for a birthday or festival);
  4. pays online.

The gift card is created only after the payment is confirmed by the payment gateway, never before. The recipient gets an email with the code and a link to a printable card — straight away, or on the chosen date. The buyer gets a receipt (without the code).

What you need: an online payment method that can confirm such a payment on its own. Today that is PayU. Cash on delivery, bank transfer and other methods you confirm by hand cannot be used for gift cards. If no suitable method is set up, the page tells shoppers that online payment for gift cards isn't available yet.

Linking to it. Shoppers find it from My account → Gift cards and from the balance page. To put it in your footer, click Add 'Gift cards' link to footer menu in Settings → Modules → Gift Certificates → Settings — it adds the link once, to your footer's help column where there is one. You can move, rename or remove it in My store → Navigation, or add /gift-cards to any other menu there.

Tax. A gift card is a way of paying later, so no GST is charged when it is sold; the receipt says "Gift certificate – not taxable at sale". Tax is charged as normal on the products it is later spent on.
